The Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum (APIAHF) influences policy, mobilizes communities, and strengthens programs and organizations to improve the health of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) populations. We approach our work with the philosophy of coalition-building and developing capacity both for AAs and NHPIs and in partnership with diverse racial/ethnic communities. APIAHF is based in San Francisco and has an office in Washington, DC, which focuses on policy and communications.
Position Summary:
The Community Initiatives Director will be responsible for developing, delivering and overseeing national, state, and/or local initiatives to impact policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) changes that improve health equity for AA and NHPI communities. These initiatives will often be implemented in partnership with APIAHF subgrantee organizations. Thus, the Community Initiatives Director will work with the VP of Community Strategies, the Community Projects Director, and the Capacity Building Director to ensure a coordinated approach to working with APIAHF’s subgrantee organizations. The Community Initiatives Director will serves as APIAHF’s primary staff to support the AIM for Equity National Network, (a national network of organizations focused on AA and NHPI health equity).
Strong candidates will have previous experience organizing similar PSE initiatives at the local, state, and/or national level as well as strong program leadership and management skill and experience. Previous experience providing technical assistance and training to community based organizations is preferred.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership and guidance on key PSE change issues to APIAHF’s Executive Staff as well as APIAHF’s Leadership Team
- Works with VP of Community Strategies to develop, deliver, and oversee PSE change initiatives focused on AA and NHPI health equity at local, state, and/or national levels.
- Work with CB Director and Community Projects Director to develop and deliver tools, materials and resources for the assessment, building and strengthening of management and organizational capacity of local community organizations, their coalitions and their communities in regards to evidence-based strategies to impact PSE change.
- Directs the development and implementation of programmatic PSE initiatives in accordance with the organization’s mission and strategy.
- Conduct fundraising for APIAHF including seeking and developing proposals.
- Ensure programmatic compliance with federal, state and other funder guidelines.
- Coordinate, manage and monitor program budget, contracts and work plans including being a liaison with funding sources for contract and program oversight.
- Contribute to and support overall agency leadership.
- Track and analyze program issues at executive, legislative and federal agency levels.
Required Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or eleven years of experience in health, behavioral science or related fields.
- Minimum seven years relevant experience in increasing levels of responsibility and authority in managing program and grants, including but not limited to monitoring and compliance, program evaluation, and technical assistance
- Minimum five years relevant experience managing evidence-based interventions to impact PSE change or similar community-level change initiatives
- Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing programs as well as managing multiple program budgets and contracts
Demonstrated supervision experience
Skills, knowledge and abilities:
- Extensive knowledge of communities both locally and nationally, as well as the implications of national and local politics on AA and NHPI communities.
- Extensive knowledge of health policy, community planning and organizing, and community empowerment frameworks/best practices.
- Advanced public speaking, facilitation, technical assistance, training, and writing skills.
- Demonstrated ability to cultivate relationships with staff, board members, volunteers, and supporters of culturally diverse community-based organizations and coalitions.
- Ability to direct federally funded program with large, complex projects and initiatives
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and internet applications in a Windows environment.
- Demonstrated strong supervision skills of both administrative and professional staff, simultaneous supervision of multiple staff, and experience with conflict management, evaluation, and staff development.
- Demonstrated experience working effectively in team environment.
- Ability to effectively represent APIAHF in the community, to outside agencies, and to funders.
- Ability to collect/analyze data to make effective program leadership decisions in a timely manner
Desired Qualifications:
- Master’s degree or equivalent experience in health, behavioral science, nonprofit management, or related fields and ten years of health related work experience.
- Leadership position and a minimum of three years’ experience within local, regional and/or national AA and NHPI community.
- Program management and direct work experience within local, regional and/or national AA and NHPI organization
- Strong initiative and creativity, including ability to work under pressure with deadlines.
- Bilingual/biliterate in an Asian or Pacific Island language.
