DOMESTIC VIOLENCE RELATED HOMICIDES

Important Request

The Asian & Pacific Islander Institute on Domestic Violence is collecting information about domestic violence-related homicides and suicides in Asian and Pacific Islander families. Please send us clippings or news stories from the local and ethnic press so we can analyze the data.

The Asian and Pacific Islander Institute on Domestic Violence identifies domestic related homicides as a critical issue affecting Asian women, given that they – along with other women of color – are disproportionately represented in victim statistics.

The term domestic violence related homicide or domestic homicide refers to a wide range of killings by intimates, of their partner, children, family members, bystanders, etc. The term femicide has been suggested to denote the killing of women on account of their gender. These terms establish a connection between domestic violence and murder of intimates/family members but they have some inadequacies. There are intimate homicides where there is no evidence, prior history, or information about domestic violence; or the abuse that precedes a homicide is not typically defined as domestic violence (e .g., being forced to watch and imitate pornographic acts).

We are aware that addressing this issue can cast our communities in a negative light, but our communities are replete with resistance to ‘cultural’ justifications, developing innovative prevention and intervention strategies, and organizing efforts that confront community complicity and systems failures.
