GENDER VIOLENCE:
ANALYZING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

Violence in women’s lives is typically conceptualized as a series of abusive, horrible or tragic events; and domestic violence is explained as a ‘cycle of violence’. But, the cycles of violence women live with are quite different: occurring at various stages in, and repeating throughout, their lifecycle. Some of the dynamics of domestic violence API women describe to advocates differ from those other women experience. We have conceptualized these realities in three ways:

• A Lifetime Spiral of Gender Abuse depicts the continuum of violence and abuse that female infants, children, adolescents, adults and elders can experience at any or many stages in their lifetime. Available in English, Chinese, Farsi/Persian, Korean, Tagalog, and Vietnamese.



• The Coiled Spring of Domestic Violence was articulated by rural women in India, to describe their experience of intra-familial abuse. The complexity of their model defies over-simplifications of the ‘cycle of violence’. Available in English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Punjabi, Tagalog, and Vietnamese



• Domestic violence specific to API women
