Building Community Research Capacity
In support of the Health Through Action (HTA) Program, the RED team provides training and technical assistance to improve our community partners’ capacity to conduct research and use the findings strategically. We are conducting a series of webinars this year on community-based participatory research, research methods, data collection, analysis, and reporting, as well as how to use research and data strategically for policy advocacy, community education, and other interventions.
We help to build the evidence base for advocacy to improve data on AA and NHPI health on national, state, and local levels. We work to develop, convene, and sustain a national policy consortium of leading researchers, community advocates, and policy makers towards this goal. Working with our AA and NHPI community partners and other public and private partners nationwide, we also help build and advance national research initiatives on AA and NHPI health.
Recognizing that the paucity of research and data has hindered efforts to address health disparities for AAs and NHPIs, we conduct independent research projects to help improve understanding of AA and NHPI health and to raise awareness of health issues disproportionately affecting our communities. Our findings are intended to help elected and appointed officials, community leaders and advocates, and community residents to develop appropriate policies and programs and strengthen partnerships to reduce and eliminate health disparities among AAs and NHPIs.
The RED team compiles, updates, and disseminates data on the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of AAs and NHPIs to help inform the work of APIAHF and its partners. The main data sources we use include the American Community Survey (ACS), the Current Population Survey (CPS), and the decennial Census.
The Research, Evaluation, and Data (RED) team works to inform and build the evidence base for policy advocacy, community education, and other initiatives APIAHF conducts independently or in partnership with its partners to advance Asian American (AA), Native Hawaiian (NH), and Pacific Islander (PI) health and promote health equity.
