This webinar focused on expanded access to coverage, health disparities, and funding opportunities for community-based organizations under health care reform. APIAHF Policy Analyst Paulo Pontemayor discussed the health insurance exchanges and health care provisions that will help reduce health disparities among Pacific Islanders. Don Novo, Medicaid Program Branch Manager, and Tom Schenck, Region IX Pacific Island Territories Lead, provided an overview of the changes to Medicaid.

Herb Schultz, Director of the Region IX office, opened the webinar with an overview of the Department of Health and Human Services, the role of the Region IX office, and key benefits of health care reform. James Mason, Senior Advisor to the Director of the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, gave a summary of the Office’s outreach and ongoing implementation work with the Pacific Island territories.

Racial Equity Initiative Program Manager
Taunu'u Ve'e, MA, is the manager of the Racial Equity Initiative Program for the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum (APIAHF), a national health justice organization which influences policy, mobilizes communities, and strengthens programs and organizations to improve the health of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders.
Tau works with emerging Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander leaders to be more effective advocates at the local, state, and national levels.

A Rapidly Growing Community
The Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) population is growing rapidly in the United States and has diverse health and health care needs. The Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) Affairs Program strengthens the capacity of NHPI organizations, coalitions, and leadership to promote programs and policies geared towards a national health agenda, one that will continue to progress in years to come.

Limited by the available data, most of the statistics presented in this report represent the aggregated NHPIs as a whole, although we used disaggregated statistics for distinct ethnic groups to the extent they were available.

The enactment of health care reform legislation will advance access to affordable, quality care for Pacific Islander communities.
