Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders Have Highest Percentage Increase of HIV/AIDS
SAN FRANCISCO - In recognition of World AIDS Day, the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum (APIAHF) today urged Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders (AAs and NHPIs) to get tested for HIV.
Recent data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have indicated that HIV/AIDS cases among Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders continues to increase significantly. In comparing data from 2002 and 2006, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders experienced the largest percentage increase (22%) in annual estimated AIDS cases diagnosed. This constitutes the largest percentage increase for any racial/ethnic group.
"These increases are compounded by the continuing HIV/AIDS related stigma that persists in many Asian American and Pacific Islander communities," said Ed Tepporn, director of APIAHF's HIV Program. "Our communities often face significant cultural, linguistic, economic and legal barriers to HIV testing, prevention, and care."
Cultural taboos related to same-sex behavior and drug use can prevent AAs & NHPIs from seeking out or obtaining life-saving information and services. CDC estimates that one in four individuals living with HIV/AIDS is unaware of their HIV status. Across the U.S. there are less than 25 prevention programs that specifically provide HIV testing, prevention, and care services to AA and NHPI communities. Many of these programs face the dual challenge of raising community awareness about the impact of HIV/AIDS while simultaneously seeking support from funders and policymakers who typically do not prioritize efforts for AA and NHPIs.
"APIAHF applauds President Elect Barack Obama's commitment to developing and implementing a comprehensive National HIV/AIDS Strategy," said Tepporn. "It is crucial that this strategy also include plans to address the increasing domestic epidemic among emerging populations such as Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders."
APIAHF is a national advocacy organization dedicated to promoting policy, program, and research efforts to improve the health and well-being of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities.
