Dear APINCSN member,
As the 2012-2013 Asian & Pacific Islander National Cancer Survivors Network (APINCSN/Network) Chair, I would like to take this opportunity to connect with you and inform you of the many new and exciting initiatives that our Network has been working on this past year.
This year we welcomed four new National Advisory Council (NAC) members representing Maryland, Southern California, Georgia, and Arizona. Our NAC members have such an amazing set of skills and experiences and all of whom are very passionate, committed to the mission of the Network and highlight the need to disaggregate data for AA and NHPI communities. We also have representation from Hawaii, California, Texas, Massachusetts, Georgia, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Ohio. Our volunteer NAC provides APIAHF staff with recommendations on planning, implementing, and evaluating community-driven strategies to address sustainable cancer strategies in our communities. You can read more about the group by visiting:
Apart from our NAC, the APINCSN also consists of cancer survivors, their family members, health care providers, researchers, health advocates, community members, health departments, and organizations who are concerned about the issue of cancer and survivorship in Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) communities. We link people to critical resources, such as contact with other survivors, referrals to cancer support and survivorship services, access to multi-lingual cancer materials, and also offer supportive and educational networking opportunities. We are a national advocacy coalition, working to educate and advocate on the issue of cancer through speaking events, online webinars, and promoting our members into national policymaking and research committees. Currently, we have about 500 individual and organizational members across the nation and in the Pacific.
There are so many ways for you to get involved. We are working on a number of projects and activities, including developing a culturally tailored Survivorship Care Plan, planning a Training of Trainers curriculum for our
Community & Advocacy Training on Cancer and Health (CATCH) leadership trainings which have been well received in 7 states reaching over 190 participants, advocating for a special report of AA and NHPI cancer data, updating our state 21 AA and NHPI cancer briefs, building relationships with state cancer programs and coalitions, and spearheading efforts to establish an AA and NHPI Cancer Survivors Day.
As a member of your NAC, we hope to serve you in many ways. I am very excited to share that we are launching a monthly newsletter called “News You Can Use” which will contain updates from the APINCSN and important resources on policy and advocacy, cancer, healthy eating, and upcoming events. As a member of the Network, you will be receiving News You Can Use each month and through this newsletter, you will get to know the people, activities, and initiatives that make APINCSN special.
There are many ways for you to stay engaged with our Network. If you haven’t done so yet, I invite you to join us by:
- Visiting our website www.apincsn.org, where you will find more information on our programs, cancer resources, and membership.
- If you are a part of the Facebook online community, I highly encourage you to become a fan of APINCSN’s page, www.facebook.com/apincsn!
- Finally, to receive information on cancer resources, upcoming events, webinars, funding and research opportunities, please send a blank email to: apicancer-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.
I know that our work and personal schedules can get really busy, but I personally hope that you can continue staying engaged with us. With your participation and feedback, our combined efforts will go a long way in improving the cancer burden for our Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities.
Thank you and I look forward to developing a stronger relationship with you!
Sincerely,
Zul Surani
APINCSN Chair
