Governor?s 2003-2004 Budget Proposal Include Deep Health Cuts

On February 27, 2003, The California Endowment announced three language access grants, bringing to 24 the number of such grants that it has awarded.

Language Access Advocacy Project – The Asian and Pacific Islander American Health Forum, along with six partner organizations, the Asian Pacific American Legal Center, the California Pan-Ethnic Health Network, the California Primary Care Association, the Fresno Health Consumer Center of Central California Legal Services, the Latino Coalition for a Healthy California, and the National Health Law Program, will review, monitor and strengthen local, state and federal polices that support and enhance health interpretation and linguistic access and will increase provider and health care consumer awareness of existing policies.
Bridging Language Barriers in Health – New California Media will develop a public engagement campaign aimed at improving language access in health care settings for limited English proficient health care consumers. Twelve linguistic groups will be targeted through 200 ethnic media outlets, print, radio, TV and online.
Videoconferencing Medical Interpretation – The Alameda County Medical Center will develop an operational model of videoconferencing medical interpretation for limited English proficient patients at the Center and San Francisco General Hospital.
