Background:
In order to take advantage of the attention that national priorities would have in an election year, the Asian and Pacific Islander American Health Forum (APIAHF), along with its partners on the National Council on Asian Pacific Americans (NCAPA), decided to elevate the concerns of Asian Pacific Americans to the level of a Presidential platform. The resulting document, Call to Action: Platform for Asian Pacific Americans National Policy Priorities, sends a message to any and all candidates for elected office that they cannot afford to ignore the APA community and the APA vote. Therefore, political candidates must address the many policy issues raised in our platform.
APIAHF participated in this effort because our vision is a multicultural society where Asian American and Pacific Islander communities are included and represented in health, political, social, and economic areas and where there is social justice for all. APIAHF took the lead in writing the health platform, with assistance from the Association of Asian Pacific Community Health Organizations (AAPCHO) and the National Asian American and Pacific Islander Mental Health Association (NAAPIMHA). The health-related policy priorities outlined in the Platform include: primary and mental health care for all, data collection and research, language access and cultural competence, empowering APA to overcome poverty, and domestic violence.
APIAHF educated California Bay-Area constituents about these issues by holding an educational forum called Having Our Say, attended by more than 150 people. APIAHF also continues to meet with elected officials and candidates for office to educate them about the health needs of AAPIs. The Platform is available at www.ncapaonline.org . Additional information on AAPI health can be found on these community websites: www.aapcho.org , www.naapimha.org , or ww.napawf.org
