Dexter Louie, MD, JD, MPA
Dr. Louie is a practicing otolaryngologist, since 1977, in San Francisco‘s Chinatown, where he was born and raised. He attended Stanford University, Tulane Medical School (MD, residency), then Golden Gate University (JD, MPA).
He was the Associate Medical Director of the Chinese Community Health Plan, a community-based HMO in Chinatown, for 15 years, and is now on the Board of Directors of Chinese Hospital.
Dr. Louie serves on the Moraga School District Board of Trustees (elected 1998), and is current Board President.
Dr. Louie is a Past President of the San Francisco Medical Society and a Board member of the California Medical Association Foundation (CMAF) for 8 years, and Chair for 4 years. He initiated the CMAF’s project on childhood obesity prevention, which has now become a national model.
Dr. Louie is Chair of the National Council of Asian Pacific Islander Physicians and Chair of the Board of the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum.
He also serves on the Steering Committees of the Network of Ethnic Physician Organizations (a CMAF project) and the AMA Commission to End Health Care Disparities. These organizations focus on issues of minority health and healthcare disparities, language and healthcare access, and cultural competency.
