Organizational Description:
The Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum (APIAHF) influences policy, mobilizes communities, and strengthens programs and organizations to improve the health of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) populations. Position Summary:
The VP for Impact Strategies will serve as the one of the organization’s highest serving staff overseeing four key organizational functions of the organization: government relations and external affairs; policy analysis; strategic communications; and research and data. The VP for Impact Strategies is also the executive administrator of the Washington, DC Office.
The primary responsibility is to design and implement a common strategy across the organization, to ensure integration of work across functional areas, and to optimize the impact of APIAHF’s work at the local, regional and national levels, all to effectively influence policy for positive social change. Working in close partnership with the President & CEO and the other executive team members, the VP’s may act as the chief executive in the CEO’s absence and as designated. As a member of the executive staff, the VP will have responsibilities for staffing the Board of Directors and any appropriate advisory committees, as well as have externally-facing, public relations responsibilities representing APIAHF.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- The VP for Impact Strategies position is the key architect of how APIAHF influences policy. The VP for Impact Strategies is responsible for the design, deployment, and setting and meeting of metrics for all policy change goals, objectives, and activities that APIAHF and its partner organizations undertake.
- In the deploying of APIAHF resources, the VP for Impact Strategies has the functions of governmental relations and external affairs; policy analysis; strategic communications; and research & data to utilize and direct for optimal impact and influence.
- The VP for Impact Strategies works in close coordination and in concert with the VP for Community Strategies for effective mobilization strategies and campaigns, as well as engagement of local and state-based constituencies to influence policy, including at the federal, state, and local levels.
- With the CEO and Board, set the direction and strategy of the organization’s content work (programs, policy, and cross-cutting functions), making programmatic and operational recommendations on how to implement the strategies set, and implementing them directly or through staff assigned to implementation.
- Provide key recommendations to the CEO and the Board on strategy and periodic updates and refinements of strategy.
- Provide key recommendations to the CEO and Executive Management on the implementation of strategy and content work (programs, policy, and cross-cutting functions).
- Takes responsibility with the Executive Management Team for how to grow and develop the capacity for optimal policy advocacy impact and influence by AA and NHPI communities, at the staff professional development level, at the level of developing CBO partner capacities, and looking across the entire organization and field on how to achieve optimal impact and influence.
- Oversee the implementation of strategies and content direction set.
- Supervise director and manager-level staff in implementing the content of the organization’s work.
- Provide leadership for the entire staff, especially in areas of professional development, organizational culture, and vision and values of the organization.
- Develop, manage, and monitor organizational budgets, especially as they pertain to program, policy, and cross-cutting functional areas.
- Program and fund development for content areas as well as for the entire organization.
- Represent APIAHF in public settings, speaking engagements, press events, and other public relations opportunities.
- Maintain and develop national profile and leadership role in the field of Asian American and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander issues, as well as in public health and health policy.
- Administer and manage the Washington, DC office.
- Contribute to the management of the organization overall and fulfilling additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- Minimum 10 years management experience, in positions with progressively more authority and with at least 2 years senior/executive level management experience.
- Master’s level degree in a related field, public health, public policy, social work, public administration, business, etc.
Skills, knowledge and abilities:
- Experience in supervision of professional staff
- Experience with financial management, budgeting, and oversight of organization wide budgets of at least $3 million or more, including federal, state, and private grants and contracts.
- Experience and demonstrated creativity and innovation in program development in the health and human services field.
- Demonstrated experience securing grant and contracts for non-profits.
- Experience at the executive level, meaning providing leadership organization-wide and staffing the Board of Directors.
- Experience working with Asian American and/or Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities.
- Commitment to working in a social justice organization.
Desired Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience of organizing work, preferably in community organizing, but also labor organizing or political organizing.
- Theoretical understanding of organizing principles and ability to train on these.
- Advanced or terminal degrees (JD, MD, PhD, DPH)
- Research, evaluation, assessment, and/or data analysis experience.
- Experience in policy advocacy work or in leadership in political institutions or campaigns.
- Experience working in philanthropy.
- Experience working in an AA and/or NHPI community-based organization in a management or leadership position.
- Bilingual/Biliterate in Asian or Pacific Islander language preferred.
- Experience serving on a non-profit Board of Directors in a related field
