Chronic Diseases

Chronic diseases affect Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders disproportionately compared to other ethnic groups. Chronic diseases are illnesses that persist over an extended period of time, are not easily or quickly resolved, are rarely cured completely, and whose symptoms can be controlled with medication. Chronic diseases include cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and other diseases.

Building a National Cancer Survivors Network

APIAHF’s Chronic Diseases Program is currently working to build the Asian & Pacific Islander National Cancer Survivors Network (APINCSN) [1] a network of cancer survivors, their family members, health care providers, researchers, and community members and organizations who are concerned about the issue of cancer and survivorship in the Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities.

Capacity Building and Training

The Chronic Diseases Program provides capacity building assistance and training to health departments, health organizations, community based organizations, cancer support groups, Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander serving cancer programs, health centers, and community members. These skills building opportunities are critical to our community members and public and private organizations in increasing their ability to create and implement programs and interventions that will improve the health of our communities.
