The Community Advocacy & Training on Cancer & Health (CATCH) Leadership Training provides individuals with the necessary training, tools and skills to be competent and effective spokespersons, advocates and leaders with regard to Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities; and to enhance personal and community capacities for advocacy and leadership on cancer control issues.
Module I: Cancer 101 and Introduction to Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Communities: Learn basic information on cancer, along with basic Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander demographic characteristics, their history and cancer rates. [Prerequisite to all other Training Modules.]
Module II: Communications and Media Advocacy: Participants will learn how to effectively use storytelling to advocate to the media, policy makers, and decision makers. Hands on exercises will help participants strengthen their messaging and effectiveness. Participants will also learn how to utilize social media as an effective communications strategy for their organizations and communities.
Module III: Data Advocacy: Participants will learn how to find data from government and non-government sources and how to use external and internal data for their cancer programs and for advocacy (e.g. fact sheets, policy briefs, and recommendations).
Module IV: Policy and Legislative Advocacy: Participants will learn about general advocacy, lobbying vs. information/education visits, civics 101, getting through to your legislator, and mock legislative visits.
Module V: Ethnic-Specific and Language-Specific Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Cancer Support Groups: Participants will be provided with an introduction to psychosocial issues and cancer; standard support models; types of support methods; how to also establish ethnic support groups; and ways to retain participation and sustain support groups.
