Asian & Pacific Islander Health Information Network

With the support of the Office of Minority Health (OMH), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Health Forum, established the Asian and Pacific Islander Health Information Network (APIHIN) in 1995. The purpose of APIHIN is to create a network for disseminating and sharing health information, resources and policy issues amongst individuals and community-based. organizations that provide health services to the Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) communities. It has evolved into an Internet-based information exchange and dissemination infrastructure that was originally created to ensure universal access to Internet-based health data and related policy information for Asian and Pacific Islanders. It is the Health Forum’s backbone for communications for policy advocacy , program delivery, and resource development, which made possible the creation and maintenance of this website.

Information Collection and Dissemination

The vision of APIHIN is one of an integrated telecommunications infrastructure that will allow Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders access to pertinent health information and resources through local community access points and key provider intermediaries. APIHIN maintains several electronic mailing list services:

Training and Technical Assistance

The Health Forum provided $7,500 to three high-need, low-capacity community based organizations working with three underserved communities (namely South Asian, Southeast Asian, and Pacific Islander). The organizations were selected as part of the initiative to target these underserved communities. The New York-based South Asian Public Health Association, the South East Asian Resource Action Center in Washington D.C., and San Frnacisco-based Radio Tonga were contracted to conduct Internet-based information collection and dissemination projects to expand the API Health Information Network.

In addition, the Heath Forum conducts quarterly training workshops on using the World-Wide Web to access health-related data. These workshops are generally open to staff members of community-based organizations and public health practitioners/advocates, and these workshops are announced through the API-Healthinfo listserve.

Policy

A key component of the APIHIN's activities is the dissemination of various policy issues that are critical to the health and well-being of the Asian and Pacific Islanders. Through this web site and the two mailing lists, we distribute important policy updates.
