Asian American Senior Citizens Service Center's Chinese American Youth Tobacco Control Ambassadors educated Chinese American youth about the harmful effects of tobacco use through a media advocacy project in Santa Ana.
Samoan Community Council of San Diego worked with youth and cultural arts to provide anti-tobacco education and outreach to the Samoan community.
January 2003 Cycle
American Asian Pacific Health Care Organization Corporation's Knowledge Through Education: Reducing Secondhand Smoke Exposure worked with Vietnamese stay at home mothers and elderly to educate them about the dangers of secondhand smoke through educational forums, pre/post tests, presentations, and public service announcements in Vietnamese media in Orange County.
San Diego Asian Youth Organization's project worked with AAPI youth to hold an anti-tobacco dance, essay contest, and anti-tobacco Lao New Year festival. A collection of stories around the impact of tobacco abuse on the youths' lives and pledges signed by participants at the anti-tobacco dance, were sent to the tobacco industry.
Sacramento Chinese Community Service Center's project worked with youth in local schools to develop their leadership and increase their awareness of tobacco issues through a tobacco storybook writing contest, and production of a selection of winning stories.
June 13, 2003 Cycle
Orange County Korean-American Health Information & Education Center's project outreached to the Korean community leaders to form an Anti-Tobacco Task Force that advocated for tobacco free and smoke free policies at community events like the Korean Festival which has 5000+ attendees.
National Asian Pacific Center on Aging - Los Angeles's Senior Thai Tobacco Education Project will develop a curriculum to train senior Thai educators and collect 300 surveys on tobacco use in the Thai community.
Asian American Coalition, Inc.'s Lahu Secondhand Smoke Education Project in Visalia will develop an educational video in Lahu to inform the community about the dangers of secondhand smoke (SHS) and discuss approaches to protecting families from SHS, as well as current tobacco laws. The Lahu community will be involved in the project via focus groups before and after the script development, and feedback on the final video.
October 24, 2003 Cycle
Guam Communications Network's Chamorro Youth Tobacco-Free Community Calendar Project will mobilize Chamorro youth to assist in the development of a culturally and linguistically appropriate SHS and cessation calendar in Long Beach.
Associated Students of Grossmont College's project will conduct workshops on API and global tobacco issues with several campus clubs in El Cajon. They will use their existing grant process for campus departments and student organizations to create and implement their own tobacco mini-grants program. A press conference will be held to share the success of the projects.
Costa Mesa Assembly of God Marshallese Christian Center's Jab Kodan (Don't Be a Butt Head) project will increase Marshallese community capacity and youth leadership development to counter pro-tobacco influences and reduce exposure to secondhand smoke. Activities include the development, creation, and dissemination of tobacco control messages and health education materials (in Marshallese designs and language), posters, and flyers at different faith based and cultural events and activities.
Korean Health, Education, Information & Research Center's Smoke Free Living project aims to reduce secondhand smoke in Korean homes in Los Angeles' Koreatown. Activities include outreaching and educating building managers, conducting pre/post education, and providing technical assistance to those interested in establishing on-site 'no smoking' policies.
