Program Staff

Roxanna Bautista, Program Director
Mavis Nitta, Program Coordinator

Chronic diseases affect Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders (AA & NHPIs) disproportionately compared to other ethnic groups. The definition of chronic diseases are illnesses that persist over an extended period of time, are not easily or quickly resolved, are rarely cured completely, and whose symptoms can be controlled with medication. Chronic diseases can include diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, etc. This definition is from the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Grantmakers in Health 2004 – Healthy Behaviors: Addressing Chronic Disease at Its Roots.

APIAHF’s Chronic Diseases Program includes the funded programs of tobacco control and cancer survivorships in addition to past projects in cardiovascular disease. APIAHF continues to address issues that are connected to the disease areas presently being addressed. Future areas that may be addressed by this program include nutrition, diabetes, and physical activity.
