Kimlin Tam Ashing-Giwa, PhD
Kimlin Tam Ashing-Giwa, PhD is the professor and director of the City of Hope Center of Community Alliance for Research and Education. She studies how culture, ethnicity, ecological and systemic contexts influence health outcomes. She is a community-minded scientists guided by a biopsychosocial and eco-cultural paradigm.
Her research assesses the influence of the biological (e.g., disease characteristics), psychological (personal characteristics), social (familial, support networks) and ecological (cultural; and micro-level e.g., work; neighborhood, and macro-systemic e.g., health care) factors on health outcomes among diverse ethnic and linguistic groups. She designs community interventions to reduce the risk and burden of chronic illness, in particular cancer. She has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles.
Dr. Ashing-Giwa was raised in a multicultural (Chinese and Afro-Caribbean) and multilingual home, and the youngest of eight siblings; she recognized the salience of culture and context very early. She is the mother of three children: Joshua - a college graduate who majored in economics; Kemi - a poised, self-possessed 6th grader; and Ajorin - a determined 1st grader. She lives in beautiful Altadena, California. She thrives on faith, family, work and gardening. She became an APINCSN National Advisory Council member in January 2012.
