Lead Agency: Asian American Health Coalition
The Houston Coalition launched the Houston Asian American Health Collaborative (HAAHC) as a part of Health Through Action to coordinate efforts towards reducing health disparities of vulnerable Asian Americans by strengthening the capacity of local Asian American community based organizations and by capitalizing on local assets. HAAHC is working to empower its members and local community groups to take a proactive approach towards systems change to ensure the health and well being of the local Asian American population, especially in the areas of cancer education, screening resources, access to care, and data collection.
This four-year project is making progress toward cultivating new initiatives, such as "HEP B in the Asian Community (HBAC)" in partnership with the City of Houston Department of Health and Human Services, local institutions, and grassroots groups. As a result of this movement, in October 2009, the Texas Department of State Health Services held its first annual Texas Viral Hepatitis Summit at the department headquarters in Austin, Texas to bring attention to and address unmet needs. A second Annual Texas Viral Hepatitis Summit will be held in Houston, Texas and will highlight HBAC activities.
