What is APIWHANN?

The Asian & Pacific Islander Women's HIV/AIDS National Network (APIWHANN) was formed in 1998 by a group of concerned Asian & Pacific Islander women.

Since then, APIWHANN has done the following: held monthly teleconferences, met in-person bi-annually, conducted groundbreaking focus groups with Asian & Pacific Islander women on the topic of HIV/AIDS and health seeking behaviors, and presented at national HIV/AIDS conferences and meetings.
Our teleconference calls are funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and we are staffed and supported by the Asian and Pacific Islander American Health Forum (APIAHF). We have accomplished a great deal with limited resources, and there is still much work to be done.

Who can join APIWHANN?

APIWHANN membership is open to all Asian & Pacific Islander women as well as other individuals who work with or provide services to Asian & Pacific Islander women.

Interested individuals can participate in APIWHANN as general members or as steering committee members. In our general membership and among our steering committee members, we strive to achieve inclusion that is diverse in ethnicity, race, HIV status, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and geographic location.

What is expected of APIWHANN general members?

Join the APIWHANN listserv at apiwhann@yahoogroups.com or APIWHANN's mailing list
Participate in quarterly teleconference calls (first Thursday of every third month at 3PM Pacific Standard Time)
Receive and review minutes from the teleconference calls
Attend face-to-face APIWHANN meetings, whenever possible
Work on APIWHANN projects by joining sub-committees, whenever possible

What is expected of APIWHANN Steering Committee members?

In addition to the expectations of general members:

Attend a monthly teleconference call (every first Thursday of the month at 3PM Pacific Standard Time)
Represent your region and/or constituency
Actively take on tasks to carry out APIWHANN's mission
Attend bi-annual face-to-face APIWHANN meetings
Be a resource or referral source for your region and/or constituency
Identify and encourage general members to become more involved in APIWHANN activities
Be committed to mentoring those who are new to the field of HIV/AIDS
Indicate when you can no longer attend the teleconference and assign a replacement when possible
Assist with note taking and preparation for teleconference calls and face-to-face meetings (rotated among members)
