WASHINGTON—Today, Kathy Ko Chin, president and CEO of the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum, released the following statement regarding the appointment of Sylvia Burwell as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

“Ms. Burwell is exceptionally qualified, bringing the necessary management, oversight skills and experience to HHS,” said Ko Chin. “She is well-suited to serve as the secretary overseeing HHS at a time of critical changes in the nation’s health care system with the Affordable Care Act. Her appointment allows HHS to continue fill an important role in public health, especially for Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders who are disproportionately uninsured and face disparities in access to care and coverage. We support her as a strong leader with deep commitment to public health.”

Burwell was confirmed by the U.S. Senate with a 78-17 vote.
